Mozart and Salieri and Kashchey the Immortal
Independent Opera Company begins its tenth season with two wonderful and rarely performed one-act operas by the Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov. Mozart and Salieri is based on a play by Alexander Pushkin and was an inspiration for Amadeus, both the play and the movie. Kashchey the Immortal, by the composer's description, is "An Autumn fairy tale" that is juxtaposed to his previous "Spring tale" The Snow Maiden, which IOC performed in 2019. Ken Simms is a proud member of Los Angeles’ opera community. A native of Los Angeles, he began his formal musical training as a youth with the California Boys Choir. After a long break which included attendance at the University of Southern California and several private occupations in the field of Finance, he began studying with William Bohn in 1999 until his retirement in 2001. Mariana Ramirez’s voice has been recognized for its “rich quality and clarity” and her performance of Antonia in Tales of Hoffman was acclaimed by Harbor Independent News as “the evening’s standout with her warm, luxurious voice.” This Fall, Ms. Ramirez is excited to be performing in Independent Opera Company’s Reopening Gala under the direction of Galina Barskaya. Daniel Brennan, Tenor
Daniel Brennan is a native of New Jersey, currently residing in Los Angeles. He recently earned a BFA in Vocal Performance at Carnegie Mellon University. During his time there, he had the great pleasure to study with Douglas Ahlstedt. In addition, he participated in the CMU Chorus and CMU Singers, the CMU Treblemakers, and performed in numerous operas at CMU, most notably as Azor in Zémire et Azor. 2021-2022 marks Independent Opera Company’s 10th Season. We decided to celebrate by making it an All Russian Season! Russian music has always been very important to IOC’s mission and artistic vision.
