We are thrilled to begin our 14th season with something truly special: the US premiere of Modest Mussorgsky’s charming and rarely performed opera, Fair at the Sorochyntsi!
Based on a story by Russian writer Nikolai Gogol, this lighthearted work brings to life the joy, humor, and color of village life—filled with young love, mischievous characters, and even a touch of mystery. The music sparkles with folk-inspired melodies and includes the famous Night on Bald Mountain.
Though unfinished at Mussorgsky’s death, this opera was later completed in a version faithful to his vision. Beloved abroad, it will now be heard in the US for the very first time—right here in Los Angeles!
Fair at the Sorochyntsi has been performed in Russia and other Russian speaking regions; however, we believe it has never been performed in the US and the IOC production will be the US premiere of this fabulous work! We are really proud to bring it to life here, in Los Angeles. We are especially glad to present this work, as it serves as a kind of cultural bridge between Russian and Ukrainian culture, with some of the opera sounding more Ukrainian than Russian.
Independent Opera Company will present Fair at the Sorochyntsi concert-style, with piano accompaniment.
