Independent Opera Company Cultural Equity and Inclusion Statement
Created in the spring of 2012, Independent Opera Company is committed to presenting the highest quality performances
at affordable prices, including senior and student discounts.
IOC wishes to make opera accessible to as many people as possible. For that reason, IOC explores a wide range of operas from different styles, periods, and countries to find subjects and stories to which everyone can relate.
Casting varies from show to show depending on the musical requirements of the works being presented. This permits IOC to continually audition and recruit classically trained singers with a wide range of experience, including college students, retirees, and musical professionals who are adding to their operatic repertoire.
Casts reflect the rich cultural diversity of our community and include singers of various races, ethnicities and LGBTQ populations.
Performers include those who are new to Los Angeles and to the United States, as well as Los Angeles natives.
Singers with physical disabilities are also cast in productions, with stage blocking designed to ensure their participation in an artistic manner.
IOC offers opportunities for emerging singers to cover a lead role or to sing with the chorus as preparation for a future role as a soloist.
When operas by renowned Russian composers are performed, language coaching is provided to the entire cast.
To reach a diverse audience, IOC presents both standard opera favorites and works by composers who are popular in other parts of the world but seldom performed in Los Angeles.
Performances are held in wheel chair accessible venues.
In addition, volunteer opportunities are offered, providing several individuals with free admission to all performances.
Previews of shows are also presented for free at public libraries to introduce new audiences to opera. IOC seeks to enrich the greater Los Angeles community by providing opera as entertainment for all.
